Tunisia has detained two former judges who were fired by President Kais Saied last year.
According to Reuters, the police apprehended Bechir Akremi and Tayeb Rached, who were among the dozens of judges and officials of the court fired in 2022.
The ex-judges’ arrests come on the second day of a wave of detentions of important people, amid mounting fears about the country’s political liberties.
The authorities arrested two famous lawmakers and a politically connected businessman on Saturday. According to reports, the arrests were made on suspicion of conspiring against state security.
After shutting down the Tunisian parliament in 2021, President Saied was accused of abusing his power by seizing control of the judiciary and imposing a new constitution that granted his office nearly unlimited powers.
