Wahbi Khazri, a Tunisia international, has transferred for free from relegated Saint-Etienne to French Ligue 1 team Montpellier.

The 31-year-old Tunisian attacker joined the team in 2018, coming from Sunderland, and scored 37 goals in 114 games.

He was unable to assist Saint-Etienne, who lost to Auxerre on penalties in a play-off, ending their 18-year run in the first division.

Khazri, who has 68 caps for Tunisia and led the team at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, was injured in March and was unable to participate in Tunisia’s victory over Mali in the 2022 World Cup play-off.

“It’s a new challenge,” he told the Montpellier website.

“I think I needed it and now I look to help the club grow, achieve its goals and give my best.”

Khazri has previously played for Bastia, Bordeaux, and Rennes in France.

A native of Ajaccio, Khazri started his career with local side Jeunesse Sportive Ajaccio before moving to Bastia. He received his first call up to the senior squad for their match against Amiens on February 20, 2009. He made his debut in that match coming on as a substitute in the 85th minute for Ludovic Genest. Bastia scored the winning goal a minute later to win the match 1–0.

Khazri was the captain of the Tunisian side that came fourth at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. In their second group game, he equalised to earn a 1–1 draw with Mali in Port Suez.

In the third match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification against Mauritania, on 7 October 2021, he scored his 22nd goal in the colors of Tunisia, thus becoming the second top scorer in the selection behind Issam Jemâa.

On the second day of the group stage of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, Khazri scored his first double of the competition against Mauritania, in a match where the Eagles of Carthage won 4–0.
