Tunisia’s General Labour Union (UGTT) has publicly accused authorities of using the media to damage its public standing. UGTT spokesman Sami Tahri addressed the issue on Facebook, noting that questions about the union’s role often come from citizens genuinely concerned about its impact, but some aim to sow doubt and spread rumours.
Tahri alleged that privately-owned media in Tunisia also face blackmail, saying all unions should stand against the transformation of public media into a mouthpiece for government and presidential interests. He added that the authorities’ “blackout” policy affects all opposition voices.
The UGTT’s relationship with President Kais Saied has been turbulent. Although the union initially supported Saied’s “exceptional measures” in 2021, which allowed him to consolidate power, it has since accused the authorities of attempting to undermine the union’s influence.
