Tunisian Minister Resigns from New Government

The Tunisian President,  Kais Saied, has accepted the resignation of State Secretary for International Cooperation, Aida Hamdi, the official gazette reported on Tuesday.

The resignation of Hamdi is the first since Nalja Bouden’s government took office in 2020  after the suspension of parliament by Saied, which was cited as a coup.

He dissolved the country’s top judicial council last month in what opponents say was a move to consolidate power and appointed a temporary replacement.

He said his broader actions are temporary and essential to save Tunisia from corruption and an elite that serves its own interests.

Former constitutional lawyer Saied, whose wife is a judge, accused the former judicial council of serving political interests.
