Tunisia's President Saied Reshuffles Governors Just Weeks Before Presidential Election

Tunisian President Kais Saied has reshuffled the leadership of all 24 governorates across the country, appointing new governors less than a month before the presidential election scheduled for October. On Sunday, Saied appointed governors to nine regions that had long been without officials, and replaced leaders in 15 other areas.

The presidency announced the changes via a Facebook post, stating that Saied had “decided to make a change in the governors’ corps.” This decision comes just weeks after a significant cabinet reshuffle and shortly before the 6 October presidential elections.

According to the statement, nine governorates, including the capital Tunis, Ariana, Beja, El Kef, Kairouan, Monastir, Mahdia, Sfax, and Gabes, were assigned new governors after months of vacancy. In addition, 15 other governorates saw their governors replaced.

The presidency did not provide specific reasons for the timing or nature of these changes.
