Tunisia’s Struggle Against UK Covid-19 Strain

Tunisia’s fight against the UK strain of Covid-19 continues to deteriorate in the country after 17 states and 95 areas were announced to be at “high” and “extremely high” risk levels.

Nissaf Ben Alaya Director of the National Observatory of New and Emerging Diseases pointed to the deterioration of many indicators at the national level in April.

144 cases of the UK strain have been reported in 16 states, and this could lead to an increase in the number of cases and deaths as observed in some European countries.

Ben Alaya highlighted the increase in the rate of positive cases to 22.9 percent amid a surge in hospitalizations and death rates.

The Health Ministry registered 34 new deaths on April 3, raising the death toll to 8,965 since the beginning of the pandemic.

There are also currently 1,480 coronavirus hospitalized patients, 352 of whom are in intensive care units, and 111 are on ventilators.

Health officials indicate a challenging situation and say they expect an increase in the number of deaths in the future.
