Turkish Exploration Vessel Begins Oil and Gas Search Off Somali Coast

Turkiye’s drive for new energy sources has led a Turkish exploration vessel to Somali waters, where it has started searching for oil and gas reserves.

Operated by Turkiye’s state-owned energy firm, TPAO, the vessel will conduct comprehensive seismic surveys in the coming months. Somalia’s government expressed support for Turkiye’s exploration, citing hopes for economic development and energy independence.

While the initiative promises potential benefits, some neighbouring countries have raised concerns about its impact on regional maritime boundaries and stability in the Horn of Africa.

This venture aligns with Turkiye’s aim to broaden its influence and secure energy sources beyond the Mediterranean. Turkish Energy Minister Fatih Donmez stated that the project underscores Turkiye’s commitment to Somalia’s development and advancing regional energy cooperation.
