Turkiye will proceed with its ambitious “Steel Dome” air defence system, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced. He explained that this system would integrate Turkiye’s layered air defence systems, ensuring that all sensors and weapons operate in harmony. Erdogan also highlighted Turkiye’s growing influence in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology, which has gained global recognition.
“The momentum we have gained in unmanned aerial vehicles is being watched with envy not only by our friendly and brotherly nations, but all over the world,” Erdogan said. He noted that the upcoming Kizilelma and ANKA-3 UAVs, currently undergoing testing, would elevate Turkiye to a “new league” in military technology.
Erdogan reiterated his commitment to strengthening Turkiye’s military capabilities. He praised the Turkish Air Force for its critical role in safeguarding the country, particularly in counter-terrorism operations. He referenced the ongoing Operation Claw-Lock, initiated in 2022 to target PKK militant bases in northern Iraq, stressing that Turkiye would continue to neutralise threats to both its security and that of its Iraqi neighbours.
Erdogan also criticised some international allies for failing to support Turkiye’s efforts, accusing them of openly backing the PKK’s Syrian affiliate and hosting separatist leaders with honours.
Reflecting on past challenges, Erdogan lauded the Turkish Armed Forces for overcoming the 2016 coup attempt orchestrated by the Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO).
Erdogan emphasised Turkiye’s commitment to supporting its allies, mentioning successful military operations in Libya, Somalia, and Azerbaijan. He underscored that few armies globally, apart from the Turkish Armed Forces, could achieve such successes beyond their borders in such a short period.
