The Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH) and the Kuwait Society for Relief (KSR) are set to send a humanitarian aid ship carrying 2,400 tonnes of assistance to Sudan. According to reports, the vessel will depart from Mersin Port in southern Turkiye on Friday after completing the necessary formalities.
At the ship’s launch ceremony in Mersin, Sudanese Ambassador to Ankara, Nader Youssef Al-Tayeb, expressed heartfelt gratitude to all those involved in providing humanitarian support to Sudan. He highlighted that approximately 8,000 tonnes of aid have been dispatched from Turkiye to Sudan in the past three months alone.
Al-Tayeb emphasised the critical need for such assistance, asserting that the Sudanese people and government would not forget this support.
Emre Kaya, a board member of the IHH, noted that the organisation is committed to sending aid to regions in dire need. KSR Director Abdul Aziz Al-Obaid confirmed that they plan to continue providing humanitarian assistance to Sudan in the future.
Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, resulting in over 20,000 deaths and displacing around ten million people, according to United Nations reports. As calls for an end to the fighting intensify, the ongoing humanitarian crisis is pushing millions towards famine due to severe food shortages caused by the violence, which has affected 13 out of the country’s 18 states.
