Heavy rain across KwaZulu-Natal proved deadly after several accidents in the province resulted in 11 deaths on Sunday and 20 people being injured.
The water level in the river between Mega City in uMlazi,Pinetown, Umdloti, Isipingo and Lamontville is rising and communities along this river are cautioned to relocate to a safer place.
Around 11pm on Sunday Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said paramedics responded to a collision on the N2 just before Hibberdene on the KZN South Coast.
Overnight from Monday, another nine were reportedly killed in the storm and several people have been declared missing while major roads in Durban and uMlazi have been closed due to flooding.
Herbst said resorts indicated that a light delivery vehicle and a light motor vehicle were involved in a head-on collision.
“Medics found that three people had sustained fatal injuries, three people had sustained serious injuries and another three had sustained moderate injuries,” he said.
Herbst said the injured patients were treated on scene by paramedics from private and government services, and once stabilised were transported by ambulance to a hospital for further care.
Just before 7pm, ALS Paramedics Medical Services responded to an accident on 1st Avenue and Ascot Street in Greyville.
Paramedic Garrith Jamieson said when paramedics arrived they found two vehicles on the road.
“One person, a female, believed to be in her twenties, sustained fatal injuries and there was nothing more paramedics could do for her and she was declared deceased on the scene,” he said.
Meanwhile IPSS Medical Rescue responded to two accidents on the N2 highway.
IPSS spokesperson Dylan Meyrick, said two people died and three were injured in a three-car collision.

IPSS later returned to the N2 at bridge 10 near Gingindlovu for reports of another serious collision.
“On arrival, paramedics found two vehicles had been involved in a head-on collision, leaving four people in a critical condition. The patients were treated on scene by Advanced Life Support paramedics before being transported to various facilities for further care,” he said.McKenzie appealed to motorists to drive carefully in the rainy weather.
