Twenty-six members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have convened following the demolition of the Assembly complex building.
The members were led by Martins Amaewhule on Thursday barely 24 hours after the demolition ordered by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The Amaewhule-led group convened a plenary session at the Assembly Quarters auditorium on Aba Road, despite a restraining court order.
A five-member group led by Edison Ehie had earlier declared 27 of the group’s parliamentarians empty due to their departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers denounced the Rivers State government’s demolition of the Assembly Complex during the Amaewhule group’s meeting on Thursday.
A different member, Major Jack, gave the Speaker the report on the Rivers State Local Government Amendment Bill, which was approved.
The Speaker of the group added that the governor’s authority to dissolve Local Government Executives will be removed if the Bill is signed into law.
A total of 26 members were present at the meeting as the group resolved to temporarily hold legislative sessions at the Assembly Quarters auditorium.
This comes amidst the political crisis in Rivers State, arising from an internal conflict between Governor Fubara and his predecessor and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister Nyesom Wike.
