At least two people died and a dozen others were injured when Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked the Zamzam camp for displaced people in North Darfur on Sunday.
The camp, located south of El-Fasher, was struck by heavy rocket and artillery fire, which was described as an “indiscriminate” attack by the local resistance committee.
Sudan has been embroiled in a war between the regular army and the RSF since April last year, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and more than 11 million displaced.
Both sides face accusations of war crimes, including targeting civilians and blocking aid. After visiting Sudan and Chad, UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher called for urgent international action, describing the crisis as “the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world” and emphasising that “we cannot turn our backs” on the situation.
Nearly 26 million people in Sudan, about half the population, are at risk of mass starvation as hunger is being used as a weapon of war.
