A clash by two factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, (NURTW), in Abuja has left two persons dead. News Central’s findings indicate that one of the murdered persons is an executive from the Nasarawa state chapter while the other is yet to be identified.
Many members and passers sustained bullet wounds while running to safety. One faction was reported to be holding a meeting in the headquarters of NURTW at Garki 2 area of Abuja, while the other moved to the Nigeria Labour Congress headquarters at Labour House, Central Business District.
Policemen have arrived in the vicinity of the NURTW Headquarters to maintain peace.
The clash between the transport workers may not be unconnected with the leadership tussle, as the current president was not the choice candidate of his predecessor. Although visible tension remains, calm has been restored at the NURTW Headquarters.
Last week, the General Secretary of the Union, Comrade Anthony Chukwudi Asogwa disclosed in a statement that there were plans to foment trouble and cause a crisis in the park.
