The Nigerian police force says members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as the Shi’ite group, launched an unprovoked attack on police personnel in Abuja on August 25, resulting in two deaths and multiple injuries.
The attack occurred at Wuse Junction by the traffic light, where the assailants targeted a police checkpoint. According to a statement from the FCT Police Command, the attackers were armed with machetes, improvised explosive devices (described as locally made bombs in bottles with kerosene), and knives.
The violent assault left two police officers dead and three others unconscious, currently receiving treatment in hospital. In addition to the human casualties, three police patrol vehicles were set ablaze during the attack.
FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth C. Igweh, strongly condemned the attack and vowed to bring those responsible to justice. The police have already made several arrests in connection with the incident.
SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT, assured the public that the situation is now under control and normalcy has been restored to the area. However, she indicated that further developments would be communicated as the investigation progresses.
This attack marks a significant escalation in tensions between the proscribed IMN and Nigerian security forces. The IMN has been involved in numerous clashes with authorities since the group was banned in 2019.
The incident raises concerns about public safety and law enforcement’s ongoing challenges in managing proscribed organisations. As the investigation continues, the police says residents of Abuja are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
