Report indicates that two Nigerian Soldiers allegedly killed a famous Muslim cleric Sheikh Goni Aisami in Gashua, Yobe State, North East Nigeria.
Sheikh Aisami was killed on Friday August 19, 2022 while on his way back to Gashua town from Kano State. This happened after he lifted a soldier from Nguru to Jajimaji town, Yobe State.
Apprehension greeted Gashua and environs when the news of the murder of the highly-revered Islamic scholar broke.
While on their way, the soldier identified as Lcpl John of 241 Reece Battalion, Nguru stopped the Cleric and shot him thrice, at
Chakama village dumping his body to steal his car.
The suspect later called his friend Lcpl Adamu Gideon of the same Battalion after the stolen car refused to start.
Residents in the area saw the corpse of the cleric where it was dumped around 10 pm on Friday and reported it to the police.
The culprits were subsequently apprehended by the police while still trying to figure out how to start the vehicle.
“From all indications, the scholar was followed by the assailants who thought he carried along with him a huge amount of money. After they had gunned him down, they stabbed him with a knife and then dragged his corpse and dumped it under a raffia tree”, a resident told newsmen.
Sheikh Goni Aisami had spent the last 30 years preaching in the area and across the state. Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has demanded investigation into the murder of Sheikh Aisami. The remains of the Sheikh has been laid to rest.
Spokesman of the Yobe State Police Command,DSP Dungus Abdulkarim confirmed the incident, noting that some suspects have been arrested in connection to the crime.
He added that the suspects are under investigation at the state CID in Damaturu.
