Two South African Cricketers Test COVID-19 Positive

Two South African cricketers, who were listed among the national team players due to participate in a squad camp, have tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Thursday, while announcing the development, said the squad camp began on Tuesday and will end on Saturday.

The body did not name the affected players but said the players have been sent into isolation and will miss the camp.

CSA had conducted 50 tests on players and support staff before the team’s culture camp in Skukuza from 18 to 22 August. The camp, focusing on the team’s “identity, environment and performance goals” features 32 players.

“The testing is in line with fulfilling the organisation’s obligation and commitment to control the spread of the virus,” the CSA said in a press release on Thursday.

“There were no replacements made for the two players who tested positive. All those unable to attend the camp will join the proceedings virtually.”

Former captain Graeme Smith, now CSA Director of Cricket, has denied accusations of racism and says he is unaware of any such incidents during his 11 years in charge of the side.

South Africa has this year missed a mix of test and limited overs series against India, Sri Lanka and West Indies due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A number of their leading players are contracted to play in the Indian Premier League, which is due to start next month.
