The United States has called for an “independent, transparent, and prompt investigation” into the abduction and murder of Tanzanian opposition figure Ali Mohamed Kibao.
Kibao, a leader of the Chadema party, was reportedly beaten and doused with acid before being found dead in Dar es Salaam after being abducted by suspected security agents.
The US Embassy in Tanzania issued a statement on September 9, 2024, condemning the murder and other recent acts of violence and urging a thorough investigation.
The Embassy emphasised that such acts undermine democratic values and violate Tanzanian constitutional rights.
Tanzanian businessman Rostam Aziz has also condemned the violence and expressed condolences to Kibao’s family and the Chadema community.
Aziz praised President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her commitment to democratic values and human rights, urging Tanzanians to support her efforts against oppressive practices.
President Hassan has called for a comprehensive investigation into Kibao’s death, describing it as an “extremely grave incident.”
The Home Affairs Minister, Hamad Masauni, also condemned the murder of the opposition leader and stressed the need for accountability.
This incident follows recent concerns about political repression in Tanzania, raising fears that the country might be returning to the repressive policies of the previous administration.
