The U.S embassy in Kenya praised Kenyans for holding a peaceful election and urged all parties to cooperate to amicably settle any outstanding issues.
It stated that William Ruto‘s election as president-elect of Kenya was a “important turning point in the electoral process.”
“Going forward, we urge all parties to work together to peacefully resolve any remaining concerns about this election through existing dispute resolution mechanisms,” it said.
The embassy requested that political figures keep urging their supporters to participate in the election process peacefully and without using violence.
With 50.49% of the vote, Ruto was declared the election’s victor, barely defeating his opponent, former prime minister Raila Odinga.
However, Odinga’s poll workers claimed they were unable to confirm the outcome, and several electoral commissioners declared they were unable to “take ownership of the result.”
By claiming that the election process was “the most transparent ever” in Kenya, Ruto has vowed to work for all Kenyans.
While there were reports of protests in important areas supporting Odinga, there were celebrations in Ruto’s strongholds.
