The United States Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa David Satterfield has reportedly arrived Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for a two day working visit.
Satterfield will meet with the Ethiopian government, African Union, and United Nations officials, as well as representatives of humanitarian organisations.
On Thursday January 27, 2022 the United States voiced alarm after Ethiopia’s Tigray rebels announced a military operation in the neighbouring Afar region, but hailed moves by the government to ease a state of emergency.
On Friday, the UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said that women had faced “unimaginable” horrors in the conflict-torn regions of Ethiopia.
Mohammed became the highest-ranking UN official to visit Ethiopia since the government launched an offensive against the militants in the Tigray region in 2020.
