The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has delivered 700 tonnes of food aid to Somalia to support families struggling with severe drought in the Horn of Africa. The aid was handed over to the Somalia Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) during a ceremony attended by UAE Ambassador to Somalia, Ahmed Juma Al-Rumaithi, and SoDMA Commissioner, Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle.
According to Abdulle, the aid will be distributed across multiple drought-hit regions, with 300 tonnes allocated to Kismayo in Jubaland State and 200 tonnes to Garowe in Puntland State.
An additional 200 tons will be sent to secure areas near Mogadishu, while 200 tons will be directed to regions between Mogadishu and Jowhar.
Abdulle expressed gratitude to the UAE for its ongoing support in addressing Somalia’s humanitarian crises. Somalia has been grappling with recurring droughts and famine, with 3.9 million people affected in 2023 alone due to water shortages, agricultural destruction, and livestock deaths.
