The feature was first introduced in Uber’s other global markets in 2017.

A new feature introduced by ride-hailing app, Uber, will offer customers the option to tip drivers, selecting from pre–set or custom amounts.

“You can now show your appreciation for going the extra mile by tipping your driver directly through the Uber app after the trip has completed”, says Uber in a statement.

The tipping system was initially introduced in a US pilot programme in June 2017 and is expected to improve driver earnings and form part of a number of changes to help drivers improve workflow.

In 2018, Uber introduced the feature in South Africa; this was a second feature added to the South African user experience after introducing a call back option.

Uganda is another African country that enjoys this feature.

For riders who use split-fare, the company says, “the rider who originally requested the trip will be able to select the tip amount for the trip. If a tip is added by the original requester, it will not be split with the other passengers”.

To ensure qualitative use, driver ratings must be provided prior to the feature’s tipping options.
