Police in the East Kyoga region of Uganda have arrested a 53-year-old man for allegedly raping his 100-year-old mother.

According to police spokesperson Fred Enanga, the suspect is from Olitoi village in Asamuk Town Council in Amuria District.

Police said the information gathered so far shows that the suspect reportedly broke into his mother’s house, tied her hands and legs, and raped her.

“The suspect had separated from his wife, but on September 8, he returned home at 11 p.m. local time and found the mother already asleep in a grass-thatched house. He entered the house and tied her hands using a mosquito net before raping her. He later returned to Asamuk Trading Centre in Uganda, where he spent a night,” Enanga told journalists on Monday during the weekly police press briefing.

He also said that because of the alleged suspect’s actions, locals wanted to lynch him the following day, but police saved him.

“We rushed him to Asamuk Health Centre III for medical examination, and that is where we are guarding him,” Enanga said.

When police arrived at the crime scene, they allegedly discovered bedding strewn about and the victim’s front door broken. The police have condemned the alleged act.

“This is an abomination where a son, instead of protecting an elderly mother, victimised her in one of the most shameful and inhumane acts. We strongly condemn the act. We are also going to subject him to a mental examination to establish if he is normal,” he said.
