The Government of Uganda has finally admitted that over 1,000 people were detained prior to the Presidential elections three months ago.
The acknowledgement came following the pressure by the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP). The Opposition platform called on the government to resolve and release more than 400 of its supporters and members
A leading rival against President Yoweri Museveni, Bobi Wine was also arrested in March while leading a protest against the detention of many of his supporters. He was released hours later without charge.
UN observers have called on the authorities of Uganda earlier this week to cease targeting the political adversaries and to release all those arrested
