East African giant, Uganda has commenced the licensing of its fisheries industry, through the regulation of the companies that gain entry into its waters.
The nation’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industries and Fisheries said in a statement on Wednesday that the idea is to promote the fisheries industry.
It said the industry is expected to achieve sustainability through regulation of fishing capacity on Ugandan waters. Interested companies’ entry and exit models from the fisheries sector will also be measured.
The German government, in its collaboration with Uganda gave E-licensing equipment to communities in the country, as form of support of the licensing operations.
Joyce Ikweptu, Acting Director for Fisheries also added that the Ugandan government is speaking with Kenya to streamline its fishing exports to the Democratic Republic of Congo through Ugandan waters. This is to avoid trouble.
Recall that a tussle ensued between Uganda and Kenya over the transportation of fishes from Lake Turkana to the DRC via Uganda.
Ugandan security services had also impounded exports from Kenya at Kikorongo near the Mpondwe border.
Illegal fishing has been a problem in the region with Uganda warning locals not to engage in the act. They’ve also been encouraged to seek licenses before fishing.
Responsible fisheries is one of the ways to keep the ecosystem valid and also spare against far-reaching climate change.
