A Chinese national Zhao Haizhanga has been detained by the Police in Uganda following a Tuesday morning road crash that killed two schoolchildren and left three others severely injured.
In a statement, police said Haizhanga allegedly hit the students at Kamusenene village along Lubaali- Bukuya road in Kassanda district, as he tried to overtake a truck loaded with logs.
The two bodies were moved to a local morgue for autopsy. “He killed two instantly and injured the other three yet to be identified,” the police said.
Haizhanga who was driving a Toyota Hilux registration number UAU 001V was detained by police as the investigation of the incident continues.
Uganda’s Annual Crime Report 2022 indicates that the country registered 20,394 cases of road accidents in 2022 compared to 17,443 registered in 2021. It showed that 22 people died out of every 100 accidents, while 61 per cent of all accidents were due to reckless driving.
