Uganda Election: Police Warn NUP Presidential Candidate, Bobi Wine, Ahead Manifesto Launch

Ugandan Police have issued a warning to the National Unity Platform (NUP) and its presidential candidate ahead of a planned manifesto launch.

Opposition NUP’s candidate, a former reggae musician, Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, is expected to lead the event in the western city of Mbarara on Saturday.

The police warned Bobi Wine and his party to adhere to the ministry of health guidelines in its planned manifesto launch.

Local police boss Abas Byakagaba said on Friday that his forces would not standby to see NUP members “disregard the standard operating procedures.”

He said that political campaigns and rallies remain banned in the country.

Bobi Wine had a run-in with the police on Tuesday, November 3rd. The Ugandan pop star had handed in his nomination papers to run for president in elections in January. Moments later, police smashed the window of his car, arrested him and pepper-sprayed his face before driving him home.

Dozens of his supporters who had escorted him were arrested and other injured after police fired tear gas to disperse them.

Uganda will hold elections in January next year.
