The Indian Association in Uganda celebrated 101 years of existence in Uganda with a grand event held at the Lugogo Cricket Oval over the weekend, marking a significant milestone.
The occasion also commemorated India’s 76th Independence Day, which was originally celebrated on August 15.
According to its corporate social investment strategy of assisting communities, paint manufacturer Kansai Plascon was one of the event’s co-sponsors.
Santosh Gumte, the company’s managing director, said: “We are proud to be part of this vibrant celebration and continue our tradition of giving back to the community.”
The event was distinguished by the presence of Dorothy Kisaka, executive director of the Kampala Capital City Authority, and Minsa Kabanda, minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs.
Top Indian performers like Shivam Singh, Jared Ali, and Senjuti Das, as well as Indian dance groups, gave mesmerising performances at the event.
Since its establishment in 1922, the association has served as a pillar of the Indian community in Uganda, fostering harmony and social cohesion.
Through its charitable endeavours, the association significantly contributed to the eradication of Indophobia in the Ugandan African community, enabling the peaceful coexistence of both communities.
Despite making up less than 1% of the population today, the Indian community provides a sizeable portion of Uganda’s tax revenue.
