Uganda Records 299 New Covid-19 Cases

Uganda’s health ministry says the East African country recorded 290 new ccoronavirus (COVID-19) infections in its latest update on the pandemic.

The new infections bring total confirmed cases in Uganda to 22,188.

According to the health ministry, a breakdown of the new infections are Kampala (143), Masaka (31), Wakiso (25), Kyotera (18), Luwero (17), Pader (8), Tororo (7), Moyo (6), Kakumiro (8), Busia (7), Buyende (5), Gulu (4), Buikwe (1), Amuria (1), Bukomansimbi (1), Mukono (1), Arua (1), Kayunga (3), Adjumani (1), Kamuli (1). Two truck drivers: Elegu (1), Busia (1).

Uganda has recorded a total of 206 COVID-19 deaths. The cumulative number of recoveries to-date stands at 9,117.

Meanwhile, one patient died of the COVID-19 disease at Kanungu Health Centre IV in Kanungu district, Western Uganda this and a staffer got infected, an official at the facility has said.

Julius Baluku, who oversees the operations at the facility, said the employee who contracted the virus has since gone into self-isolation at home and that the health facility, located in western Uganda, has since been disinfected.

“We have one [member of] staff who tested positive for COVID-19 and has been sent for home-based management. The contacts of our staff have been identified and have been instructed to be home awaiting testing,” he said.

“The health unit has been disinfected.”

It is understood that some of the health centre’s departments were temporarily closed. Baluku said work will resume on Monday.

“For the client that was being managed in the ward and later died, we had instructed the health workers to put on masks, gloves, wash hands at every level of the procedure and maintain other SOPs [standard operating procedures],” added Baluku.

He said the direct contacts of the victim that wore no masks have been contacted and instructed to isolate themselves.
