Uganda Reverses Meat Sale Ban Following Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak

Uganda Lifts Meat Sale Ban Amid Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak

Authorities in Uganda have reversed the recent ban on the sale of meat in the capital city of Kampala in response to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.

Health officials had imposed the ban last week and ordered the closure of all slaughterhouses in an effort to contain the spread of the disease.

However, Minister for Kampala City and Metropolitan Affairs, Minsa Kabanda, announced on Sunday that the ban had been lifted temporarily as the government evaluated the situation and assessed the disease’s impact in the capital.

While urging caution, Ms. Kabanda emphasised the importance of ensuring that animals undergo testing before being slaughtered.

The ban had faced opposition from traders who accused the government of failing to effectively prevent the spread of the disease.

Reports indicate that foot-and-mouth disease has been detected in 40 districts across the country, highlighting the widespread nature of the outbreak.
