Military authorities in Uganda say two people were killed during an attempted explosive attack near a Catholic church in the capital, Kampala.
In a statement released Tuesday, the military said security forces “intercepted and neutralised two armed terrorists” in the Munyonyo area, a suburb of Kampala.
According to police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, the deceased—a man and a woman—were riding on a passenger motorcycle. As security forces closed in, the woman reportedly detonated an explosive device.

Rusoke declined to provide further details, noting that an investigation is currently ongoing.
The incident occurred as Uganda marked Martyrs’ Day, a national holiday commemorating a group of Christians executed between 1885 and 1887 under the orders of a local king. The annual event draws thousands of pilgrims to a separate church near Kampala, where dignitaries, including President Yoweri Museveni, gather for mass.
Explosive attacks remain rare in Uganda, though authorities occasionally warn of plots by extremist militants opposed to Museveni’s rule.
