According to US media, a court in the US state of Utah has awarded the family of a Ugandan activist who was killed in 2020 at Arches National Park more than $10 million in damages.

The figure is significantly less than the $140 million requested by Esther Nakajjigo’s family, but it is the greatest federal wrongful death decision in Utah, according to their lawyer.

Her husband was granted $9.5 million, her mother $700,000, and her father $350,000.

Nakajjigo, 25, and her husband Ludovic were visiting eastern Utah’s national parks when she was killed. As the couple drove out of Arches National Park, a blast of wind swung around an unsecured metal fence. It slashed through the passenger side door, decapitating the Ugandan activist.

The tragic nature of Nakajjigo’s killing, combined with the fact that she was an ambassador for Women and Girls in Uganda, enhanced the visibility of her case.
