An arrest warrant has been issued by a Ugandan court for an international award-winning author who fled to Germany last month.
After being denied permission to leave the country to seek treatment for injuries he claims he acquired while in custody, Kakwenza Rukirabashaija jumped bail.
He had been denied his passport by the court.
Rukirabashaija was detained in December after winning the Pen Pinter Prize for an international writer of courage the previous year.
For posting disparaging statements about President Yoweri Museveni and his son on Twitter, the 33-year-old author was charged with offensive communication. He refuted the allegations.
The Greedy Barbarian, a satirical novel about high-level corruption in a hypothetical society, and Banana Republic: Where Writing is Treasonous, an account of the torture he endured while in jail in 2020, are two of the writer’s best-known works.
