A 34-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing his brother’s nine-year-old son and chopping him into pieces in Ntungamo District, Uganda.
Reports say the suspect who resides in Kanyanzira Village in Nyanga Parish, Rubaare sub-County, placed his nephew’s hacked flesh in a pan, then handed the remains to his wife to cook immediately.
However, the wife let out a loud wail when she discovered that the “meat” her husband asked her to prepare was in fact, the remains of human flesh.
The woman’s distressful call alerted the locals who rushed to the scene, only to identify the the body as that of his little nephew. He was immediately handed over to security operatives.
Rubaare Sub-county councillor John Kabeho detailed the disturbing incident:
“The suspect was left home with the minor after his wife and child left for church. When the wife returned from church, her husband told her that he had bought some meat and it was in a pan in the kitchen. He instructed her to cook it immediately because he was hungry.
“When the wife entered the kitchen, she found chopped pieces of human meat in the pan.”
Kabeho also revealed that the suspect has been receiving treatment for mental health issues since 2020, and seemed mentally stable until the shocking incident.
“He was taken to hospital three years ago when he developed mental challenges, but he became well later and returned home. However, he kept showing signs of mental challenges and he would be taken to churches for prayers. Family members say he had recovered when it happened,” he detailed.
A recent study released by Makerere University School of Public Health and Butabika Hospital in Uganda on October 31, 2023, revealed that 30% of Ugandans have a mental disorder. According to the study, one in three Ugandans struggle with mental health challenges.
