Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine, known for his vocal criticism of President Yoweri Museveni, will undergo surgery following a leg injury sustained during a chaotic incident on Tuesday. His lawyer, George Musisi, confirmed that Bobi Wine, real name Robert Kyagulanyi, suffered the injury after being hit by fragments from a tear gas canister in the town of Bulindo, near Kampala.
Bobi Wine, 42, was rushed to Nsambya Hospital in pain, and doctors have recommended surgery to remove the fragments. The incident occurred when police allegedly fired tear gas at a small group of Wine’s supporters. Musisi condemned the police’s actions, suggesting they intentionally targeted the opposition leader.
Ugandan police have stated they will investigate the incident, but officers at the scene dispute the opposition’s account, claiming Wine injured himself while getting into his vehicle. The situation remains tense, with four of Wine’s supporters arrested during the fracas.
Wine has been a persistent critic of Museveni, who has ruled Uganda for nearly 40 years, and has faced frequent arrests and violent dispersals of his rallies.
