Uganda’s Katakwi District gets UGX 300 Million Classroom Blocks

Two newly constructed and furnished classroom blocks at Oriou Primary School in Katakwi District has been commissioned by the Embassy of Japan in Uganda.

Under the Assistance for grassroots Human Security Project grant, the 300 Million Shillings covers two classroom blocks, 10 stance convenience, and furniture for the classrooms.

James Peter Okoel, the headteacher of Oriau Primary School says that the lack of classrooms affected the normal running of classes.   He says that many classrooms were decrepit, too small and some on the verge of collapse.

The Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, Fukuzawa Hidemoto, explained that they had to intervene and ensure that a more enabling learning environment is created for the pupils and the teachers.

Hidemoto also asked members of the school management committee, parents, pupils and teachers to make proper use of the new facilities and guard them jealously from wrong elements who may want to vandalize them.

He added that the grant is to boost the efforts of countries like Uganda to meet economic growth and achieve sustainable development goals.

Several schools in Katakwi district under the Universal Primary Education (UPE) programme in Ntoroko district have no windows and there is an acute shortage of furniture. This has forced teachers to abandon their work.
