Kainerugaba advanced quickly through the ranks of the Ugandan army after receiving instruction at Sandhurst, a prestigious British military institution, as well as in Egypt, the United States, and South Africa.

The 47-year-old has been mentioned as a potential successor to his 77-year-old father, who has ruled since 1986.

Until his retirement, the president’s son superintended over all division and independent units of the military structure in Uganda. He also ran the army outside the elite SFC unit.

Lt Gen Kainerugaba’s retirement comes days after he expressed his support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

He tweeted: “The majority of mankind (that are non-white) support Russia’s stand in Ukraine.”

“Putin is absolutely right!” he added.

“When the USSR parked nuclear-armed missiles in Cuba in 1962, the West was ready to blow up the world over it. Now when Nato does the same they expect Russia to do differently.”
