UK Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves Welcomes Rwanda's Offer to Return UK Money

The United Kingdom’s Shadow Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, has expressed appreciation for Rwandan President Paul Kagame’s willingness to refund the money received by his government for the UK’s asylum seeker scheme.

Rachel Reeves pledged to redirect the funds towards “processing asylum cases” and “cracking down on the criminal gangs that are at the heart of this.”

In an interview with the BBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Reeves outlined Labour’s stance, stating, “An incoming Labour government would scrap that scheme.” She emphasised the potential benefits of reclaiming the money, redirecting it to enhance asylum case processing, and combatting criminal networks associated with the issue.

Rachel Reeves believes that utilising the funds in this manner would be a more effective approach, contributing to the success of controlling small boat crossings.

“If we can get that money back and invest that money instead in processing asylum cases and cracking down on the criminal gangs that are at the heart of this, that would be a much better use of the money and would have a much greater chance of success in controlling the small boat crossings that we absolutely need to do,” she said.
