Pro-Palestinian students in the UK have staged protests on campuses across the sovereign country following the war in Gaza.
Students in Leeds, Newcastle and Bristol set up tents outside university buildings in protest against the war in Gaza.
Meanwhile, in Newcastle, Apartheid Off Campus stated that its demonstration was to “highlight the institution’s investment strategy and its complicity in the Israeli military’s war crimes in Gaza and the West Bank.”
Another camp was set up at Warwick University as students elsewhere also held marches and one-off protests.
According to reports, these groups urged universities to sever ties with Israel following its military campaign in Gaza, suggesting a cessation of financial investments, including stocks in Israeli companies. The Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the largest British protest group, posted on social media, calling for universities to divest from what they termed Israel’s genocidal actions.
“Today, students from Leeds, Newcastle, Bristol and Sheffield have joined Warwick – demanding that our universities stop investing in Israel’s genocide!”
The recent protests in the United Kingdom was influenced by violent clashes on American university campuses, including Columbia University and the University of California, which resulted in over 1,000 arrests.
