Ukraine announced on Sunday that it carried out a drone attack on a Russian oil refinery located south of Moscow. This marks the second strike on the same site in under two weeks as Kyiv continues its campaign of drone assaults amid Moscow’s ongoing invasion.
Ukraine’s military confirmed that the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine targeted the Ryazan Oil Refining Company overnight. “Explosions and a fire were recorded in the targeted area,” stated the Ukrainian army.
The refinery, one of Russia’s largest, is reportedly used by Moscow’s air force, according to Kyiv.
Pavel Malkov, the regional governor of Ryazan, claimed that Russian air defences had intercepted and “destroyed” the drones.
He added that officials were currently assessing the extent of the damage caused by the incident.
This attack is part of Ukraine’s broader strategy of targeting critical infrastructure within Russia, a tactic Kyiv has increasingly employed over the nearly three years of conflict.
As the war grinds on, both Russia and Ukraine are striving for strategic advantages on the battlefield.
The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, with the potential for diplomatic efforts to gain renewed attention, especially as political developments, such as Donald Trump’s return to the White House, unfold.
