The Foreign Office of Pakistan in Algeria has said the social media accounts of its embassy in Algeria have been “hacked” and the posts did not belong to the mission.
“The Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts of the Embassy of Pakistan in Algeria have been hacked,” the Foreign Office spokesperson said on Twitter.
It further mentioned that all recent messages posted through those accounts were not from Pakistan’s embassy in Algeria. The Foreign Office’s statement came after social media posts from the embassy said that all missions of the country were allegedly “ordered to divert funds to Ukraine for evacuating Pakistani nationals.”
It further claimed that no Pakistani citizen had been evacuated from war-hit Ukraine and that the embassy did not have funds to pay its employees.The said post questioned if the embassy should turn to India for funds as Pakistani nationals were “using the Indian flag to flee”.
This is not the first time the social media accounts of a Pakistani embassy have been compromised. In December, 2021, the official Twitter account of the embassy in Serbia shared a message that criticised the Pakistani prime minister and made the same claim about the non-payment of salaries.
Arslan Khalid, who advises Prime Minister Imran Khan on digital media, clarified the situation on Twitter while adding that the foreign office was conducting an inquiry to determine how the social media account of its embassy in Serbia had been hacked.
