Two Kenyan women, Nanjala Nyabola and Dr. Jemimah Njuki have been appointed to serve in strategic positions in the United Nations.
Nanjala Nyabola, a writer, researcher, and activist will be on the advisory board on effective multilateralism, while Dr. Jemimah Njuki, who was recently named one of the 100 most influential people in gender and policy, will lead the work on Women’s Economic Empowerment around the world.
The newly formed board, co-chaired by former Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and former Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, is set to expand on the ideas in the Secretary-General’s report, Our Common Agenda, which was released in September 2021.
Both women have shared their hopes and excitement as they take on their new roles to change the world.
Ms Njuki, the new Chief, Economic Empowerment at UN women will sit at the UN’s offices in New York.
Dr Njuki wrote of her posting on LinkedIn, “This month, I am extremely excited to start a new assignment as Chief, Economic Empowerment at UN Women.”
“And so appropriate to be joining in March, when we celebrate International Women’s Day, and as global leaders, governments and women’s movements converge in New York for the 66th Commission on the Status of Women,” she added.
Dr. Njuki believes that current global, regional, and national commitments, as well as the voices of civil society and women around the world, are reassuring for a more equitable world.
“I am excited to be part of the change! And where else more appropriate to drive this change from than UN Women?” she added.
