UN Secretary-General António Guterres says the world is on its final stretch to limit global temperatures and calls for more action against climate change.

Speaking at the COP29 World Leaders Climate Action Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, Guterres stressed that the world is on a final countdown to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, and time is running out.

“At COP28, you all committed to move beyond fossil fuels; to speed up net-zero energy systems with clear milestones; to scale up climate adaptation; and to align your national climate plans — or NDCs — with the 1.5-degree target. Now, it’s time to fulfill these promises.” He said.

He said that unless emissions plummet and adaptation soars, every economy will face greater fury. However, he added that with the amount invested in grids and renewables surpassing the amount spent on fossil fuels last year for the first time, there was every reason to remain hopeful.

He also made a case for the economic incentive, saying that every renewables rollout and innovation will translate to a reduction in prices, ultimately leading to solar and wind becoming the cheapest source of new electricity.

He urged leaders to prioritise emergency emissions reductions, to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, and to cut global emissions by nine per cent every year so that by 2030, they must fall 43 per cent on 2019 levels.

“At this COP, you must agree to rules for fair, effective carbon markets that support that fight to advance global goals to triple renewables capacity, double energy efficiency, and halt deforestation by 2030.”

“All this must be achieved in line with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities, in the light of different national circumstances.” He said.

Guterres said that while all countries must play their part, the G20 must lead as they are the largest emitters with the greatest capacities and responsibilities, and they must bring their technological know-how together with developed countries supporting emerging economies.
