António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, has urged the safeguarding of the “democratic values” of the Tunisian revolution.
Guterres said the Tunisian democratic revolution was an inspiration to people all over the world, and he hopes it will remain one of the most important democratic values.
The top UN official said his organization has been closely monitoring Tunisia’s situation “with concern” following Kais Saied’s consolidation of power.
“We see the concerns and I hope that these concerns will be lifted by the full restoration of an institutional democratic framework that works for all Tunisians,” Guterres said.
During a July power grab, Saied dismissed Tunisia’s government, engulfing the country in political and economic crises exacerbated by a soaring Coronavirus outbreak.
His move was initially backed by Tunisians who were tired of a political elite who were perceived as corrupt and incapable of solving the country’s problems.
The actions of the North African leader on 25 July and afterwards have been described by many as a coup. Saied decided last month that the Tunisian parliament would remain suspended until December 2022.
