The United Nations (UN) will donate $6 million in relief aid to the Maiduguri flood victims in Borno State.
Mohamed Fall, the Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, stated on Tuesday that a joint mission of UN agencies, NGOs, and the Nigeria Red Cross Society visited Maiduguri over the weekend and met with people affected by the flood. Many of them had been displaced multiple times due to conflict and insecurity in the area.
The flood, caused by an overflow in the Alau Dam, located just over 10 miles south of Maiduguri, has caused significant damage.
Food is being provided to the affected individuals, and efforts are underway to deliver food to areas cut off by flood waters. Water supply, sanitation hygiene services, and water purification tablets are being provided to prevent disease outbreaks.
Additionally, hygiene and dignity kits, emergency health and shelter services, and other items are being distributed to women and girls.
The Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs collaborates with donors to secure additional funding. The flooding has damaged more than 125,000 hectares of farmland in Nigeria.
