The UN Security Council has failed to agree on a joint statement with Burkina Faso after a meeting behind closed doors on Tuesday to discuss last month’s coup in the West African nation.
In a statement circulated by Ghana, the Security Council expresses concern about the coup and demand the restoration of the constitution, as well as the release of ousted President Roch Marc Christian Kabore
The Council would also support efforts by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to help mediate the crisis.
Last week, ECOWAS said it was going to intensify penalties against Burkina Faso and demanded that the nation return to Civilian rule immediately.
The January 24 military coup in Burkina Faso that overthrew the nation’s President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré came amid rising insecurity in the West-African nation.
This is the country’s fourth coup in less than two years. President Kabore’s ousting came after Malian presidents Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta and Bah N’Daw in August 2020 and May 2021 respectively, as well as former Guinean President Alpha Condé in September 2021.
