Alice Jill Edwards, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, has called for an immediate investigation into the deaths of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons.
Speaking at the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Edwards condemned the treatment of Palestinian prisoners, especially after October 7, 2023.

She praised the enforcement of the Gaza ceasefire but highlighted the ongoing mistreatment of detainees in Israeli custody.
Edwards noted that some Palestinian detainees had been released as part of an exchange agreement, many of whom had been arbitrarily detained under harsh conditions. She emphasized the deteriorating health of these detainees and stressed the need for independent investigations into the torture they endured.
