According to administration officials, President Joe Biden will announce a new policy to protect hundreds of thousands of undocumented spouses of American citizens from deportation.
The policy will cover those who have been in the country for at least 10 years and will allow them to legally work in the US.
It will be the most significant relief programme for undocumented spouses since the Obama Administration announced the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, in 2012.
It is believed that over 500,000 spouses of US citizens will benefit, in addition to about 50,000 young people under the age of 21 whose parent is married to an American citizen.
The announcement comes just before an event on Tuesday to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the DACA programme, which has enabled over half a million migrants to remain in the US.
Those who qualify will have three years to apply for permanent residency and will be eligible for a three-year work permit.
The White House also plans to streamline and expedite the visa process for highly skilled undocumented immigrants who have degrees from US universities or job offers in their field.
Immigration has emerged as a primary concern for many US voters ahead of the November election.
