Students from the University of Benin blocked the Benin-Ore Highway on Wednesday to protest weeks of blackouts on their campus.

The protest comes just two weeks before their first semester examinations, severely affecting their preparation.

Reports indicate that the university experienced a blackout following a dispute between the university and the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) over an escalated electricity bill.

University management opposed BEDC‘s alleged tariff increase. The electricity bill, averaging N80 million, purportedly surged to between N200 million and N280 million.

Consequently, the university resorted to power generators and rationing electricity across campuses and hostels.

“We have only had one hour of electricity daily since this issue started. We are tired of studying in the dark. We need electricity to study and prepare for our exams. The university management must take responsibility and resolve this matter,” said John Afolabi, a protesting student.

The protest disrupted vehicular movement, leaving many commuters stranded and unable to reach their destinations. Despite the rain, students remained steadfast in their protest.

Dr Benedicta Ehanire, the university’s Public Relations Officer, disclosed that the Senate was in session to address the issue.
