The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU) are set to co-host the 11th edition of the Federation of African University Sports (FASU Games), scheduled to take place from 20th to 29th September 2024. Branded as ‘Lagos 2024,’ the event promises to be a significant showcase of athletic prowess and academic collaboration across the African continent.
In a recent press briefing at the UNILAG Senate Building, Vice Chancellor Professor Folashade Ogunsola revealed that the opening ceremony will be held at the UNILAG Sports Centre, with the closing ceremony taking place at LASU’s Ojo Campus. She highlighted the importance of the games as a platform for fostering unity, youth empowerment, and academic excellence across Africa.
The 2024 FASU Games will feature 1,500 athletes and officials from 43 African countries, competing in 17 sports disciplines, including athletics, football, basketball, volleyball, handball, badminton, table tennis, swimming, taekwondo, judo, karate, cricket, hockey, chess, scrabble, and boxing.
Both UNILAG and LASU have been making extensive preparations to ensure the success of the event, including upgrading their sports facilities to meet international standards.
This edition of the FASU Games follows UNILAG’s successful hosting of the 26th Nigerian Universities Games (NUGA) two years ago, which was widely acclaimed as the best NUGA event to date. The university aims to build on that success and continue its tradition of promoting sports excellence.
Professor Ogunsola encouraged the athletes to participate with enthusiasm and integrity and invited sports fans and spectators to attend, promising an unforgettable celebration of African unity and talent.
The games will be held across UNILAG’s Akoka Campus and LASU’s Ojo Campus, symbolising the collaborative spirit of this year’s hosts.
