The United States government has given refuge to the family of Tanitoluwa Adewumi, a 12-year-old chess champion from Nigeria.
In 2019, Adewumi shot to fame after winning the New York state chess tournament for his age group. He and his family had previously been living in a homeless shelter.
Tanitoluwa, together with his parents and elder brother, emigrated to New York from Nigeria in 2017 to escape Boko Haram’s terrorist attacks.
The family had arrived in the country and immediately filed for religious asylum.
On Wednesday, the Washington Post confirmed that the family had been given refuge in the United States.
